While most people in the state know about the Cascade Mountains and the Coastal Range, we also have the Siskiyou, Wallowa, Elkhorn, Ochoco, Stawberry, Blue and others. Each is impressive and unique in its own way. From the wet Coastal Range to the dry Steens Mountains to the alpine Wallowa Mountains, there is something for everybody here.

People who live in the Willamette Valley don't get to see gems like this very often. The Northeast corner of the state is a beautiful area and is well worth any trip you can make there. This was from a seven day trip we took to the area.

From Baker City, travel Highway 30 to Haines. Turn west on County Road 1146, and follow the Elkhorn Drive Scenic Byway signs to Anthony Lakes. Turn left at the campground Entrance. Anthony Lakes Guard station is located adjacent to the campground.

The lake is at 7,100 foot (2,164 meter) elevation. Generally open from May until October, the exact dates depend on the winter snowpack.

North and Middle Sisters From Mckenzie Pass

One of my favorite drives is the route up (and I mean up) Hwy 242 from McKenzie Junction on Hwy 126, to its junction with Hwy 20 in Sisters.

McKenzie Pass is one of my favorite places to visit. It is rather bleak, just a lava bed and some mountains and the occasional tree, but it is beautiful at the same time.

I was out one day driving home from central Oregon when I saw this nice sunset coming on. I grabbed a map and looked around for a scene of some kind to use. This is what came of my trip to the lake I found on the map...

    Smith Rock State Park is 651 acres (263 hectare) of year around climbing surfaces of up to 550 feet (168 meter) high. Comprised of welded tuff (compressed volcanic ash and columnar basalt, there are more that 1,500 climbing routes from easy to 5.14c.

    Smith Rock State Park is considered to be the the birthplace of modern sport climbing. On some routes the hardware is left in place for the next person to use. In other areas clean equipment like chocks and camming devices are recommended.

    The park has been seen in many movies including: The Postman, Mission Impossible II, Swordfish, Rooster Cogburn.

Smith Rock State Park is located near Terrebonne just North of Redmond in Central Oregon.
